First, the buyer does not want to have a ton of fixing up to do when they move in, so fix the little things: a loose cabinet door; a broken window blind; scuffed walls; etc. Look at each room with 'outsiders' eyes- you'll be amazed at what you've overlooked living there all the time. Tackle each room until it's completely ready for the market. Don't get overwhelmed. Get help. The time you take to fix the little things will pay off in the end.Alegre Designs, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16432056616313807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401744660089689543.post-8695983576559819042010-04-06T09:29:00.003-04:002010-04-06T12:09:12.605-04:00Is that really the color you picked?Color is all around us and the choices are staggering! I'm sure you've had to choose color for something at one time or another....for your clothes, furniture, and probably even when you picked out a new car!

So, if we look at when you go picked out colors- like for a new car, somehow we always know the color we want. Red to make a statement; White to be classic; Silver to be safe; Black to be luxurious; etc. When you chose your clothing, sometimes you may have been safe and stayed neutral or wear the same colors all the time. Maybe you expressed your sense of style with pattern or took a risk with a bold tie or scarf. When you look to nature, you look for plants that 'pop' with colorful flowers and leaves. So, then, why do we have a hard time when it comes our interiors? Obviously it's not because we hate color.

I like to think of color as a way of expressing your personality....as an extension of you. It doesn't matter what the neighbors think, or your friends, or your mother-in-law. What matters is that you love the colors you live with, every day. Why should you have to live with something you don't like? There's hundreds of colors to pick from, so there must be at least one or two you love.

How to select that right color? There are various ways of doing it: Take a fabric that you love and match it. Have a favorite dish? Use that for inspiration. Or just love a color and always wanted it in a room? Then take a chance & go for it!

So, if you try your hand at selecting a color your own and you make a mistake, it's only paint. It can be repainted. But, if you want to get it right the first time, you may consider hiring a color specialist to help you.

Happy decorating!
JulieAlegre Designs, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16432056616313807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401744660089689543.post-74380147216407051912010-04-01T23:35:00.002-04:002010-04-01T23:47:00.183-04:00Taking in the gorgeous weather today and got inspired to clean house! Windows are open, light coming in, and then I realized it's time to clean those drapes and blinds; and the windows need cleaning before the screens can get put in to let in all that great fresh air and get the mustiness of winter out of the house! Where to start?!

First things first- if you have custom drapes that cannot come down for professional cleaning, then get out the vacuum and put that soft brush attachment onto the wand! Gently clean your drapery following the pleats or folds in the fabric, and if there's trim, be cautious when going over it. Vacuuming drapes will keep the fabric fresh and make them last longer. After all, investing in custom treatments you love means you want to cherish them for years to come. A little tender care is all they need.

While you've got the vacuum and wand in hand, hit those blinds or pleated shades! The same technique, going with the blind in a slow motion will ensure they will last. If they really need more cleaning, especially blinds, then take a soft damp cloth and wipe the dust away. Take care around the cords.

When cleaning your windows, please be cautious not to get any windex type cleaner on your custom drapes. If you can machine wash, or remove drapes for dry-cleaning, do this before the windex hits the glass! This makes for easy cleaning and ensures no chemicals on the fabrics!

Once your windows are sparkling and the drapes are all dust-free, open those windows this weekend and let that fresh air pour in!

~Happy Designing,
JulieAlegre Designs, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16432056616313807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401744660089689543.post-54268166024711539432010-03-25T09:28:00.007-04:002010-03-25T11:26:57.962-04:00Spring is in the air....FINALLY!It's been a long long winter here in the Northeast and, just like everyone else, I am so happy that Spring is finally here! So, why not express yourself and welcome spring....here are some fun ways to celebrate spring:

If you're the crafty type, create a new front door floral arrangement bursting with the colors you love! I've been away for a week and the Northeast has already had it's first nor'easter!
But, on the bright side, this is my favorite time of year. Leaves are changing; the air is crisp; sweaters & boots are coming out of the closet again. And the colors are glorious! This week I'll be decorating the outside of my home- not just for Halloween, but for Fall.
Mums of all colors will line the walk to my front door where visitors will be greeted by pumpkins and fall leaves on my stoop. A wreath of brilliant fall florals and fruits will adorn my door, giving a taste of the fall decor that lies inside! Stepping inside, the banister will be draped with fall vines and ceramic pumpkins will be scattered throughout the kitchen. Pillows on my sofa will echo the fall motif. Throw blankets in burgundy and burnt orange plaid will dress the ottoman and a soft chenille blanket will drape the back of the love seat. Put the fireplace on and we're all set for a comfy, cozy night.

Alegre Designs, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16432056616313807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401744660089689543.post-24613769580307590202009-10-08T01:18:00.004-04:002009-10-08T01:39:43.482-04:00Decorating Tip: Table-scape for Fall DecorWhen setting a table for a the holidays (or any occasion), make sure you have a centerpiece! To find out what color makes you feel good, and yes, colors do have an effect on your psyche, tune in to your attitude when you're in a new space. When you're around red, what do you feel? Blue? Yellow? Did you hate that restaurant because of the food or the surroundings and how it made you feel?

How about learning from nature? What's your favorite time of year (if you're in an area that experiences the changing seasons) Winter, Fall, Spring or Summer....which is your favorite time of year? WHY? Think about it....and what colors go with that season? Maybe that's your favorite color!Alegre Designs, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16432056616313807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401744660089689543.post-55759725085765345672009-05-02T15:54:00.002-04:002009-05-02T15:57:29.701-04:00Take a moment...Saw my extended family last night at a birthday party- it's amazing how fast time has slipped by without seeing everyone. Makes you wonder how that can happen...and how we let it happen. Why not take a moment to let those you don't see often know you're thinking of them. It only takes a few minutes and what's that compared to months or years that may slip by us? Guilty. And today I thought about how I help others-mostly in my business, designing homes/businesses. I know I'm going to sound selfish to say this, but I truly love helping others accomplish their dreams because I get such a feeling of satisfaction seeing my client's faces light up and say "ooo" and "ahhh" at the whole outcome. And it's a wonderful feeling! And I'm so lucky to have client's who feel so comfortable with me that they put their trust in my abilities as their designer to create their space for them. What else can I ask for?Alegre Designs, LLChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16432056616313807186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8401744660089689543.post-83993480311911819882009-04-22T10:00:00.002-04:002009-04-22T10:41:24.528-04:00Today is my Mom's birthday...So, to honor my Mom on her very special day I thought I'd share a poem with you.
